CARE
CARE provides direct service to individuals and families as well as early and on-going training and development for students and professionals working with developmental disabilities.
Applied Research
At the ARU, researchers develop curriculum and assessment materials, promote research to improve classroom instructional methods, and train professionals to become leaders in their field.

The Norris and Dorothy Haring Center for Applied Research and Training in Education houses three individual units: the Experimental Education Unit (EEU), CARE, and the Applied Research Unit.

Dr. Owen Robert White died at home on Saturday, March 31, 2012. The Haring Center and the fields of special education and applied behavior analysis lost a friend, colleague, and teacher. Owen worked at the University of Washington for 39 years and retired in June 2012 to spend more time with his beloved bride, Peggy, his children, and grandchildren. He was the director of the Experimental Education Unit from 1990-1993. Owen was a pioneer in the area of Precision Teaching and measurement. He will be remembered and missed by his many graduate students, colleagues, and friends. If you want to share a remembrance of Owen with his family, please send it to Ilene@uw.edu.
Lecture: Updates on Treatments for Autism
Dr. Ilene S. Schwartz, College of Education professor and Director of the Haring Center, will elcture on autism treatments. This lecture is part of a speaker series entitled "Referral to Evidence Based Mental Health: For What, For Whom, and How?" sponsored by the Division of Public Behavioral Health and Justice Policy and the School of Social Work.

JUNIOR SIBSHOPS
Did you know that history was made at the Haring Center? On 11/8, staff from CARE held a SibShop for kids ages 4-5, the first SibShop for kids this young in the state of WA! The group of awesome siblings was held down at the EEU--and from the sounds of it, the kids had an amazing time. SIBSHOP INFO
Applied Research Unit Researchers to Investigate Intervention for Infants & Toddlers with Autism
Dr. Ilene Schwartz, director of the Haring Center, will head up a 4-year study to examine the efficacy of an intervention for children under the age of 3 with autism and their families. The study, funded by a $2.8 million IES grant, is one of the first studies of its kind, and will help inform critical early intervention practices for very young children on the autism spectrum.
Whole Foods Markets in the Puget Sound region partnered with the EEU on a commemorative student art bag project to raise funds for the donation.
EEU Summer Camp will be July 2-July 26.
Preschool and Kindergarten Camp is held Monday-Thursday, 9:30-1:00.
EEU Summer Camp is for current EEU students only. Tuition prices and application forms have been sent home. Please talk with your child's teacher regarding qualifying for Extended School Year services for children receiving special education.
